FAQ: What are Wikki Stix made of?
- Wikki Stix are NON-TOXIC, made of food-grade wax, like you’d find in bubble gum and lipstick… along with hand-knitting yarn, like you’d use to knit an afghan. Wholly made in the USA.
- They do not contain gluten, latex, dairy, nor any nuts or nut by-products.
- The wax provides that “stickability” factor, so they stick to paper and other smooth surfaces with just fingertip pressure. No glue, no paste.
- And…they are easy to peel up and reposition to make changes. So “mistakes” virtually disappear, which helps build self-confidence.
- Wikki Stix do not break or tear apart, but cut easily with scissors.
- Appeal equally to boys and girls; recommended for age 3 and up.
- Conform to all U.S. CPSIA child safety requirements for use by children 12 and younger.

I definitely recommend doing as suggested on the instructions and cutting some of the "sticks" down so that the letters can be properly made. The only thing that is a bit annoying, but of no fault of the manufacturer, is that the dog hair from our merry band of mutts gets stuck all over them when we play on the carpet no matter how recently I vacuumed. It is also a bit time consuming to untangle the sticks after my son wads them all up into a jumbled mess. (Again, this is to be expected with wax sticks, but it still doesn't make it fun to untangle them.)
Also, on a side note, I have found that Wiki Sticks are the PERFECT way to hang stockings under the mantle! I just happened to be contemplating how to hang them more effectively than last year when I looked up and saw a stash of Wiki Sticks sitting on the mantle :)
Pros:
- The stix are just the right size for the letters so that they fit on top of the tracings almost perfectly. A few stix need to be cut in half or thirds for the shorter segments, like the horizontal line of the A, but most of the pieces fit at the right length over the letters on the cards.
- I like that the stix are made of yarn and wax, so that they are non-toxic. I don't have to worry about any chemicals getting on his hands that he has to wash off after he's done playing with them.
- They're easy to bend and adjust and easily stick to themselves so you can make other creations as well.
- They're relatively sticky on the included cardstock alphabet cards, any plastic type surface, dry-erase board, basically anything with a shiny coating, but does not stick to your hands (similar to the stickiness of a sticky note pad).
- Only a light pressure is needed to keep the stix in place, even upside down.
- Great assortment of colors - red, pink, orange, light green, dark green, light blue, dark blue, purple, black
- Reusable again and again
Cons:
- Some of the wax rubs off onto the alphabet cardstock and require periodic cleaning. I agree with another reviewer who suggested laminating the cards to make clean up easier.
- Once they're taken off the plastic backing, they don't stick back on very well anymore as they don't lay straight. You'll need another container or baggie to store them in to keep from losing them.
If you're looking for a product to help develop writing skills, these are great manipulatives to pick up, just be prepared to clean the cards off every so often and get a little baggie to store them.

I will say this, I don't care too much for the waxy residue that they leave on your hands when you use them. It doesn't bother the kids, but I personally don't like the way it feels. Also, when I used them in the classroom, they would quickly become a sticky tangled ball. So, they do require a few steps of precaution when trying to keep them clean and neat between uses.
None of the above will keep me from trying out the other products available from this company. I'm considering the numbers cards and make a picture cards for birthday gifts.
