Have you ever been in a spaceship?
No, me either. But I have been close. If you were to look at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) building from the top, it looks like a flying saucer. At night, it looks like aliens have landed and Seoul has been invaded by an UFO. Specially as it lights up and its oblong metal exterior becomes more visible.
Dongdaemun Design Plaza
In reality, the Dongdaemun Design Plaza serves as an incubator for new designers, as well as, a site for events, like concerts and conferences. Inside, you can find several stores and vendor stalls selling products ranging from handmade ceramics to 3D printing machines. The replica figurines, the ultimate selfie, will set you back a couple hundred dollars depending on the size, but if you really want one, they can make it for you here.
If you like design, this is a place you must visit while in Seoul, South Korea. It even has a cool high tech play area for the little ones.
If you are not interested in shopping, stop by just for the architecture. It’s fantastic! A great example of how South Korea is modernizing. Best of all, it’s open 24hrs and it’s free.
Now, if you are looking for cheap souvenirs, you won’t find it at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza. This is a place for one of a kind items, you know, the ones you buy for a very special person or for yourself. For fashion lovers, just head across the street where you will find big department stores, several floors high with all the brands you can think of and more.
