    Fish in Sucuri River Bonito

If you’re researching the Sucuri River snorkeling tour in Bonito, you’re probably wondering:

    • Is it really that clear?
    • Is it safe for kids?
    • Is it better than Rio da Prata?
    • Is this something you can do elsewhere in the world?

    Here’s the honest answer:

Floating down the Sucuri River is one of the most peaceful and surreal freshwater snorkeling experiences you can have — and it’s not something you’ll easily replicate elsewhere.

    This isn’t ocean snorkeling.
    It’s not rafting.
    It’s not adrenaline tourism.

    It’s quiet. Preserved. Regulated.

You drift over crystal-clear spring water while fish glide beneath you and the current gently carries you forward.

    And that feeling? It’s rare.

Why the Sucuri River Snorkeling Tour Is So Special

    Rio Sucuri, Bonito Brazil

The Sucuri River (Rio Sucuri) is located near Bonito in Mato Grosso do Sul.

Freshwater snorkeling exists in a few places worldwide:

    • Cenotes in Mexico
    • Silfra fissure in Iceland
    • Florida springs
    • Some rivers in Croatia

    But Sucuri River combines:

    • Exceptional visibility
    • Abundant fish
    • A gentle current
    • Strict environmental regulation
    • Accessibility for families
    • Wildlife sightings- monkeys, birds, and in very rare instances, sucuri snakes and small caymans

    You are not fighting waves.
    You are not swimming hard.

    You float.

    It feels like flying underwater.

    Our Experience With a 4- and 9-Year-Old

We did the Sucuri River snorkeling tour with our 4-year-old and 9-year-old.

Both are very comfortable in the water and swim independently.

    My 9-Year-Old

    He loved it.
He wanted to go again immediately.

He floated the entire 1.5–2 hours calmly and confidently.

    My 4-Year-Old

    A little more nuanced.

    • We rented a full-face mask (R$30 extra)
    • He had some trouble adjusting to it
    • The current felt slightly intimidating at first

Even though the current is gentle, when you’re small it feels stronger.

What made this manageable was the fact that a support boat follows the group the entire time.

At any moment, anyone can climb into it.

My 4-year-old started by riding on the boat, then decided it was too much fun not to be in the water. He floated alongside my husband, then got a little tired, went back on the boat and then decided that taking a ride on my back was more fun and did that for the rest of the way.

That flexibility of having a boat following the group made all the difference.

We also had an older couple in our group who did not swim at all — they chose to ride in the boat from the very beginning and still saw plenty of fish and even monkeys along the riverbanks.

That safety option makes this snorkeling tour far less intimidating than it sounds.

How to Get There (Allow Extra Time)

The Sucuri River snorkeling tour is located about 30–45 minutes outside Bonito town center.

    Important:

    • The road is unpaved
    • It is very bumpy
    • After heavy rains, it can become muddy and slippery

We allotted 1 hour to get there even though Google Maps said 30 minutes and I am glad we did.

On a dry day, we made it in about 45 minutes.

And then we had to fill out paperwork.

If it has rained recently, give yourself extra time. The road conditions can slow you down significantly.

You don’t want to rush that drive.

What the Snorkeling Tour Is Like Step by Step

Snorkelers in SUcuri River , Bonito Brazil
    1. Check-in at the farm
    2. Gear fitting (all sizes available — children to plus size adults)
    3. Short vehicle ride
    4. Easy jungle trek (short, shaded, informative, not tiring)
    5. Equipment testing in the water
    6. 1.5–2 hour float

Before starting, you test your mask and breathing in shallow water.

If at any point someone feels uncomfortable, the support boat is right there.

The float time goes by quickly.

    Is the Water Cold?

The water is spring-fed and constantly running, so it is cooler than you might expect — even in summer.

However, it is not unbearably cold.

Once you’re floating and relaxed, it feels refreshing.

The neoprene wetsuit they provide is absolutely necessary and makes a big difference.

    They provide:

    • Wetsuit
    • Mask
    • Snorkel
    • Rubber shoes

No need to bring your own gear. Lockers are available for free for your belongings and dry clothes. It’s conveniently located outside dressing rooms and by the gear area.

    The Photographer (Completely Worth It)

Each snorkeling tour includes a professional photographer.

Pricing depends on how many families in your group buy the photos.

In our case, it came out to about US$20 per family for all pictures.

    It was completely worth it.

It’s very difficult to capture high-quality family photos in a tour — and having someone document the experience made it more relaxing.

After the Tour: Stay and Relax

The snorkeling takes place on a farm property with:

    • Shower facilities
    • A pool
    • Hammocks
    • A restaurant

The food is genuinely good. Order the fried Pacu (local fish) and Cocada ao Forno (baked coconut custard/cake topped with caramel ice-cream).

Let the kids swim. Relax in the hammocks.

Turn it into a half-day experience.

Sucuri River vs Rio da Prata: Which Snorkeling Tour Is Better?

Another famous snorkeling tour near Bonito is Rio da Prata. Here is what you need to know.

    Sucuri River

    • Shorter float
    • Smaller groups
    • More intimate
    • Support boat available throughout
    • Often easier with younger kids – minimum age is 4

    Rio da Prata

    • Longer float
    • Deeper sections
    • Larger scale
    • Slightly more physically demanding – minimum age is 6 or 8 serenading on the operator.

With kids under 10, Sucuri feels more manageable.

With teens or adults wanting a longer immersion, Rio da Prata may appeal more.

    What About Rio Formoso?

Snorkeling is also available at Rio Formoso.

    Rio Formoso offers:

    • Snorkeling
    • Kayaking
    • Stand-up paddleboarding

It’s more activity-based and less about pristine spring-fed clarity.

If you want that surreal “floating in air” experience, Sucuri River stands out.

Minimum Age for the Sucuri River Snorkeling Tour

    Depends on the operator:

    • Some allow 4 years old
    • Others require 6 years old

    More important than age:

    • Water confidence
    • Staying calm with gear
    • Following instructions

    How Much Does It Cost?

    Expect:

    • R$250–400 per person
    • Full-face mask rental: ~R$30
    • Photo package: ~US$20–30
    • Transportation extra if needed

    Bonito operates on standardized pricing.

A Rare Kind of Travel Experience

There are places in the world that impress you. And then there are places that slow you down. The Sucuri River is the second kind. Floating quietly through crystal water, surrounded by fish and forest, felt almost meditative — even with kids. It’s not something you’ll stumble upon in most destinations, and that’s what makes Bonito so special. If you’re looking for an experience that feels pure, protected, and genuinely memorable for your family, this one deserves a spot on your list.
