The Best and Easiest Black Beans Instant Pot Recipe

Black beans are one of my favorite beans to eat. It is just so full of flavor and so easy to cook. For that reason I made a big batch the other day and wrote down the recipe to share with you.

I really like my beans quite simple, so that I can use it in a variety of recipes. I like to season my beans after cooking them so that they last a little longer in the refrigerator and also so that I can control the seasoning better.

For that reason, all I really cook the beans with is chicken stock (you can use vegetable stock) and a little bit of salt. It comes out great!

Then I like to enjoy it with rice, with carne asada, in tacos, burrito bowls, and as black beans dip.

But if you like to vary your black beans with different seasoning, keep reading for variations on how to prepare black beans.

This black beans instant pot recipe is simple and the building blocks for different variations. Here are a few:

Mexican Black Beans

Add the follow ingredients to make Mexican black beans in the Instant Pot.

  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 medium yellow onion diced small
  • 1 jalapeño, seeded, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • Fresh cilantro, cotija cheese for serving.

Cuban Black Beans

Add the follow ingredients to make Cuban black beans in the Instant Pot.

  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 medium yellow onion diced small
  • 1 green bell pepper diced small
  • 6 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 2 tbsps olive oil

Brazilian Black Beans

Making Brazilian black beans in the Instant Pot is a little different than making Mexican or Cuban black beans because you need to add some of the ingredients after the beans are cooked. Brazilian beans are more saucy so more water is needed.

  • 1 smoke sausage cut into round slices
  • 4-6 strips of thick bacon cut into lardons
  • 1 medium yellow onion diced small
  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 2-3 tbsps of olive oil
  • 2 additional cups of water
  1. Add the sausage and the extra water in the first step into the Instant Pot.
  2. When the beans are cooked, in a separate frying pan, add the bacon lardons, and let it cook until the fat mostly renders.
  3. Add the olive oil, onions and garlic and cook until translucent.
  4. Put this mixture into the Instant Pot, turn the sauté function on and let it boil for a couple minutes. Mash a few beans to thicken the sauce.
